IT.IS.FINISHED!!!
I am proud to report that the music video for Robert Payne’s single “Drive” is complete!!! In a previous post, I shared some stills from the video as I was editing.
The first minute of the video really sets the tone for the rest of the video. It starts out with a narrative of a man praying about returning home to his faith and expressing the fear of asking to be taken back. Robert and I came up with the idea as a way to support the story of a man who has gone out in to the world to fulfill his passion and his dreams only to realize that without his faith in God, he was empty, depleted, no where… lost.
What I love about this song and the video together is that we were able to tell the story of the Prodigal Son from the son’s perspective and in a modern-day era. Robert did a fantastic job conveying all of the emotions that one might endure reaching that revelation; the perspective of feeling stuck in a “desert” without God, to reflecting on his choices and his indulgences, desperation in the middle of “nowhere” and then finally moving through to the point of elation on “the way back home.”
As Robert and I where batting around the ideas for this video, he was really clear about a couple of things: he wanted it to look “independent” and the vocal tracking had to be “on.” Robert used his iphone to track with the song during all of the sequences. At one point, I was actually sweating it, but syncing the vocals to the track turned out not to be as difficult as I thought it would be.
We shot the Drive video in 3 separate shoots. The day sequences are my favorite. I had a blast out in the desert near Apache Junction, AZ trying to work out all of the shots for the narrative as well as the actual music portion of the video. We took two runs at shooting the night sequences on the Mill Avenue Bridge, in Tempe simply because I didn’t think I had enough light on him the first time. The second night shoot was super windy and very very cold. So when you see Robert closing up his jacket in the video, its real. He was freezing!
Creating the music video was an awesome challenge for me simply because it was done on no budget, with just me and Robert, and neither of us having much experience. My Nikon D600 was brand new so I had to figure that out. I only had a little experience using Adobe Premiere so I had to learn that very quickly as well as the Magic Bullet Looks plugins.
I loved this experience and can’t wait to do another one!
Enjoy!
In my previous post, I listed the equipment we used to make this whole thing happen:
A single Nikon D600 DSLR @ 1080p (ISO’s as high as 6400)
A GoPro Hero 2 (for the straight-on driving shots)
A VIDLED Light Bank
A Glidecam 1000
A Gitzo tripod with a Manfrotto Fluid Head
A MacBook Pro
Adobe Premiere CS6
Red Giant Software’s DeNoiser 2
Red Giant Software’s Magic Bullet Looks 2
As many of you know, my friend, Robert Payne recorded an album called “Sunlight.” I shot the cover photos and the promo photos for the album as well as some other photos for his Kickstarter campaign. After the album was released, Robert asked me to shoot his music video for the single, “Drive”. To say I was hesitant would be an understatement but how could I say no?! Armed with only the bare necessities of video equipment and an old El Camino, Robert and I set out to make a music video.
If you haven’t downloaded your copy of Drive, you can get it on iTunes here. Drive is Robert’s take on the story of the Prodigal Son from the Son’s perspective. (Luke 15:11).
Our first stop was Apache Junction for the desert / day sequences. We found the perfect location on a dirt road just off of Apache Trail and north of the Superstition Mountains. This place is a text-book, i’m lost in the Arizona desert location.

We had a great time shooting the outside shots and we were thankful we didn’t decide to shoot out here in July. As you can see in the shots below, used an older vehicle to match the engine sound heard on the recording at the very beginning of Drive.

I’m a big fan of super close up shots. As Robert was tracking to Drive playing on his iPhone, I wanted to get a really tight shot.
Jesus Saves… my favorite guitar pick. As Robert is stuck in the desert contemplating his direction, it seems fitting that he would be twirling the pick he found in his pocket from the show the night before.

I think this is one of my favorite sequences of the entire video. I’m walking backwards with my D600 on a Glidecam (that wasn’t balanced very well) as Robert tracks to Drive on his iphone and walks forward. Degree of difficulty? About 8.2.
Night shooting was more difficult than I had imagined. In fact, we had to do it twice. Even though the Nikon D600 handles low-light very well…I was still very unhappy with the “noise” factor on the first night shoot. The second attempt was much better. I brought along a friends “VIDLED” bank and it gave me just enough light to fix the noise problem yet still keep these sequences moody. I also found an amazing plugin for Adobe Premiere called DeNoiser 2 from Red Giant Software. This plugin is amazing. It applies a complex noise reduction algorithm to each frame. At 24 frames per second, it definitely adds a lot more time to the rendering process but the outcome is absolutely worth the wait.

The shot below was filmed on the Mill Avenue bridge. I love the ambient light from the string lights and the passing cars. The VIDLED bank was on a light stand and the light stand was strapped to my back so that the light shined down from just above my head. More of this scene includes me walking backwards…again.
You may recognize the sunglasses from the day sequences but Robert also wore them in the first photo shoot I did with him as he was getting this project kicked off.

Robert had a brilliant idea for a scene where he rolls up on a Bible lying in the middle of the street. When he picks it up, it opens right to the book of Luke, Chapter 15.

I am so grateful that Robert asked me to shoot this music video with him. It’s been a lot of fun but its also really challenged me in the space of cinematography. Look for the full video to be released on or around the first week of April.

On Thursday Night, Robert Payne and a crew of uber-talented musicians converged on the chapel at North Phoenix Baptist Church in Phoenix to deliver the long awaited, highly anticipated live performance of Robert’s newest album, Sunlight. The house was filled with Robert’s friends and fans along with fellow musicians who have supported Robert through the year-long journey of writing and recording his first solo album.
Nicki Park and Joshua Isaac teamed up to deliver an amazing, heart-felt worship set that at times gave me chills. Nicki started her set with a short keyboard solo set before Joshua joined her on stage with his acoustic guitar. The two, together made for a perfect opening set of pure original, emotional songs of praise and worship.

Before Robert’s set, Dr. Moffat Zimba of Northrise University made a back stage appearance where Robert presented him a copy of the Sunlight CD signed by the band. And just before the show, Dr. Zimba delivered a prayer as only he could.

Robert’s performance was nothing short of stellar. From the moment he walked on stage with his entourage until the final “good night,” the expression on Robert’s face said it all. Opening the show with one of the album’s most popular songs – “Red Letter Day”, Robert and his crew came out full of energy and ready to share this amazing album with everyone. Some of the highest points in the show include a live duet with his beautiful and gifted wife, Monna. Appearances from Thomas Porter on a few songs added just the right flavor of country / bluegrass with his dobro and a banjo. Dusty Parsons came in with a solid backing vocal performance. Long time band-mates and friends, David Ellis, Danny Ortega, Rocky Searan, Eric Borgen, and Matt Sherman all rallied around Robert in this show to deliver a flawless performance and authentic live Sunlight experience.
Robert’s rendition of the hymn “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” is one of my favorites and it will stop you in your tracks. His soulful, gospel version of this song is worthy of a Grand Ole Opry performance.
From beginning to end and all songs in between, this show was one to be remembered for a very long time. It was the perfect milestone to reach on a perfect journey of music, love, and worship that is not yet finished.

A little more than a year in the making, my friend Robert Payne is ready to officially announce the release of his new album – Sunlight. The official release date is Tuesday, Oct 23rd (but its available on iTunes a little early). In about the span of a year, Robert was able to raise 100% of the cash through Kickstarter, write the music, assemble the musicians, record the album and launch it on time… a job well done!!!
This album is a collection of original worship songs written by Robert with some help from friends Rocky Searan and Adam Searan. Robert also enlisted some other amazing musicians to get the job done: Danny Ortega, Eric Borgen, Dan Tomlinson, David Ellis, Jonathan Kingsley, Thomas Porter, Monna Payne, Ralph Patlan and a few others. The production on this record is top notch! The sound is of a country / rock / blues vibe and although each song has a distinct sound all its own, the album is a great, cohesive compilation of the style of music that is Robert Payne. Throughout the record you can hear Payne’s original vocal and guitar-playing styles, but you can also hear the influences of Jacob Dylan, John Mayer and a few others. Bottom line…get this record.
I was honored that Robert would ask me to shoot the photos for his album. In September of last year, we began the process of shooting promos shots. At the time, the album was only an idea. We shot downtown Phoenix and captured Robert in a setting where he feels completely at home – urban.

A year later, Robert contacted me to shoot the photos for the album art. Concept complete, we headed out to downtown Phoenix to capture – Sunlight.

A consummate musician and worship leader at North Phoenix Baptist Church; I have had the privilege of hearing him play his music often. Robert is not only a guitarist or a vocalist but a musician that can play many instruments. He also contributed to another friend’s album – The Broken and the Blamed by David Ellis (another UH-MAZING album). Robert is solid in his faith and has been a great sounding board for me in many areas of life: calling, parenting, creativity, art, etc. Robert has become a good friend of mine over the past few years. Thank you, Robert for your encouragement and contribution to me and the communities you serve.
Holly graduated from Sandra Day O’Connor High School this year. I and her family couldn’t be more proud of her. Along with being a gorgeous young woman, she is kind, has a wonderful heart and a never-ending smile. As I’ve mentioned before, she is one of my favorite people to photograph. Not just because she is so beautiful, but because she isn’t afraid to try a pose or a location. She really makes it easy for me.
